The publication is an official account of the administration of the Federal Metal and Nonmetallic Mine Safety Act in 1970. Health and Safety standards, both mandatory and advisory, became effective on July 31, 1970, and cover underground mines, surface (open pit) mines, and sand and gravel and crushed stone operations. During the period of July 31 to December 31, 1970, a total of almost 16,000 violations of mandatory standards and nearly 5,500 failures to comply with advisory standards were observed by Bureau of Mines inspectors. Before the inspections were completed, nearly 7,000 corrections of mandatory standards, violations, and 1,100 corrections of advisory standards were completed. The report covers development of standards, application, education and training, research and technical support, and State plans for developing and enforcing health and safety standards.
