Allowable Spans for Timber Roof Beams and Floor Joists
For different timber sizes and grades, graphs have been drawn up of allowable spans against spacing between the beams. The graphs have been compiled for timber roof beams with loadings of concrete tiles and metal sheeting and for timber floor joists with a standard domestic load. The graphs have been designed and compiled in accordance with SABS 0163 and SABS 0160 by a professional engineer and therefore comply with the National Building Regulations. The graphs are given for the latest design stresses for timber, namely V4, M4, M6, and M8 as well as the proposed alternative grades of M5, M7, and M10. Laminated beams of SA Pine and Eucalyptus grandis are covered.
