Pavement Design and Performance Study. Phase B: Deflection Study. Subgrade Moisture and Temperature Variations Under Road Pavements in Virginia
In the investigation the changes in the subgrade moisture content under five road pavements ranging in age from new to about ten years old were determined and evaluated. The moisture content was determined by means of a nuclear moisture depth probe. The investigation has shown that: (1) The higher compaction and dry density of the subgrade soil, the lower is the moisture content. (2) The subgrade moisture content continues to increase sharply from the beginning to the end of construction and then the rate of increase slows. (3) There is a sharp increase in moisture content - due to precipitation - within a year or two from the date of the construction of the subgrade. After this period the rate of increase in moisture decreases. (4) After about ten years there is very little increase in subgrade moisture content.
