Cooperative Beach Erosion Project at Presque Isle Peninsula, Erie, Pennsylvania
The project proposes construction of three partial breakwaters at strategic points along the north shore of Presque Isle State Park, Presque Isle, Pennsylvania to control beach erosion. As presently envisioned, the breakwaters will be constructed in 500 foot segments located 100 feet apart in 10 feet of water (at LWD) 1,000 feet offshore. Annual or semi-annual maintenance will consist of removing accumulated sand from beaches behind the breakwaters and redistributing it along the beaches. Severe annual beach erosion will be retarded. Attractiveness of the beaches will be enhanced and park use will increase. There will be noise, disruption and turbidity for two or three bathing seasons during construction of the breakwaters and during maintenance operations following construction. Some lake bottom habitat will be destroyed by the presence of the breakwaters.
