Structural Response of a Twenty-Story Building to the Lubbock Tornado
The Great Plains Life Building has been the predominant landmark in the Lubbock skyline for the past fifteen years. Since the night of May 11, 1970, when the city was hit by a devastating tornado, the building has been in the spotlight of the city, state, and nation. The storm severely damaged the structure, and many reports in the news media predicted its imminent collapse. In this report the events during the storm and subsequent to it are described and documented. The various types of damage to the building are described and related to the mode of response of the structural frame. Results of theoretical analyses of the structural frame are presented for correlation with an estimated wind velocity profile during the storm. Because of widespread conjecture concerning possible collapse of the building, a method is described for determining the factor of safety against collapse. Work is continuing on this phase of the project. Results of this phase of the investigation are not available at the time of this writing. Plans for restoration of the building are presented. Some general conclusions concerning the design of this building and its behavior in the storm are presented. (Author)
