Fitting FWD with SASW Measurement Capabilities
The technique of Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) is examined in this study. Tests were conducted on several pavement sites that included rigid, flexible, composite pavements. It was found that the SASW technique did not offer any additional advantage over what can be obtained from the Falling Weight Deflectometer. The field tests revealed that the results from the SASW technique are influenced by the vibrations produced by incoming traffic. The results obtained from the technique were in reasonable agreement with those obtained using FWD backcalculations. Testing pavements using SASW required considerably more time per test in comparison with FWD tests, therefore it was concluded that the technique will not be suitable for routine testing of the structural cpacity of pavements.
