This project has resulted in a general guidance for waste management options for construction timbers (including structural building timbers, joinery and other uses of timber, eg transmission poles) with respect to reuse, re-processing, combustion with energy recovery and land-filling. The report also discusses the strength grading aspects of recycled construction timber, and tested material indicates that it should be possible to use existing visual grading rules for freshly sawn timber and apply them to grade recycled timber. It seems that old timber has a lower stiffness but a strength equally high to new timber; however, some reports indicate that knots may be larger and more frequent in recycled wood, which, in general, leads to a lower grade. This is of course depending on when the timber was sawn. The strength in the tested timber did not seem to be significantly affected by large shakes or fissures, or by deep nail holes.
