Rock-Cutter Boreability Parameters
This investigation: (1) develops scaling relationships relating small-scale laboratory tests to full-scale field boring; (2) compares the efficiency of rock breakage under various cutter types; (3) develops a theoretical model of rock breakage under a cutter based on experimental rock cutting results; and (4) specifies machine design parameters based on the experimental, theoretical, and field analyses of this investigation. This report on the second year of the investigation concentrates on determining the quantitative effects of varying individual aspects of the cutting situation such as cutter geometry (type, edge angle, diameter, etc.) and cutter-rock interaction (speed of cutting, penetration, rock type, etc.). Refinements are made to the developed theory of rock cutting. A preliminary prediction equation is offered and evaluated with respect to the observed cutting results from the laboratory tests. Also, work is continued on collecting and evaluating field boring results.
