The entire lower town of Harpers Ferry is on the National Register of Historic Places. The lower town was built throughout the 19th century and it is the mission of the National Park Service to restore its nineteenth century appearance. Building 40 was originally built in 1824 and rebuilt in 1873. While not individually possessing national significance, it contributes to the national significance of the historical district and park.
