Vacant Housing Units in the Montgomery, Alabama Market Area
Housing vacancy data are given for the city of Montgomery, Ala. The data are based on the area covered by the R. L. Polk City Directory and are organized by Polk's enumeration districts. (A map is included.) The figures were gathered from September 12, 1977, to December 17, 1977, and are compared with data compiled for roughly the same period in 1976. The statistics cover number of housing units occupied by heads of households, whether these units are owned or rented, number of units available by size of structure (single - unit or multiple - unit by number of units), new construction, number of units occupied during the 1976 canvass which are now vacant, and the number of two - canvass vacancies, which are generally tied closely to deterioration and abandonment. It was found that Montgomery had 59,628 housing units, of which 4,290 were vacant, for a vacancy rate of 7.19 percent. Of these, 1,748 were two - canvass vacancies, or 2.93 percent of the total number of housing units. Most of these (1,566 units) were single - unit structures. Although this figure represents a slight increase in number of two - canvass vacancies, it is a decrease compared to total number of housing units. The statistical breakdown pinpoints the locations of these units. It was also found that 512 housing units were added during 1976 - 1977 and most were single - family homes.
