Testing and Validation of the Kansas Water-Cement Ratio Meter
A prototype device, the Kansas Water-Cement Ratio Meter, has been developed that can measure the water-cement ratio of a plastic concrete mix. The method was based on the measurement of the turbidity of the water-cement slurry separated out of a concrete mixture by 'pressure sieving'. This study was undertaken to improve the meter and do a sensitivity analysis. The results of this study show that a variation of up to 5% in cement content of the concrete did not have an appreciable effect on the results produced by the Kansas Water-Cement Ratio Meter. The effects of air-entraining and water reducing admixtures including superplasticers, can be neutralized using air-detraining admixtures. Aggregate proportion does affect the results of the meter indicating the need for calibration for a specific mix. However, this also indicates the ability of the meter to detect variations in the aggregate proportion for a certain mix.
