Hypotheses and Models Employed in the SHRP Asphalt Research Program (August 1990)
The report examines the hypotheses and models employed in the SHRP Asphalt Program. These hypotheses present the researchers' views on how asphalt properties affect performance; how the interaction of asphalt with aggregate modulates those effects; and how test methods and predictive models may be formulated to measure and estimate the influence of materials' properties on the ultimate performance of asphalt pavements. Because hypotheses must be dynamic, those presented in this report can be expected to change and sharpen in successive strategic plans as research results become available. By 1993, a core of empiracally tested and proven hypotheses will remain that can be incorporated into a consistent theory to explain how asphalt properties influence pavement performance.
