Fatique Behavior of Longitudinal Transverse Stiffener Intersection: Evaluation of the Fatique Life of Structural Steel Bridge Details
The fatique performance of a twin girder steel bridge in Dallas was investigated in this project. The fatigue life of the bridge was estimated using the results of field tests to determine the bridge's response to traffic loads and analytical and experimental studies to determine the fatigue performance of the structural details on the bridge. These studies indicated that the bridge's fatigue life was controlled by the detail used at the intersection of the longitudinal transverse stiffener. This final report presents the results of an experimental fatigue study of this detail and tests upon a retrofit detail designed to improve the fatigue life of the bridge. The experimental fatigue results confirmed the analytically estimated poor fatigue life of the bridge by a factor of at least two.
