A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This report examines what effect a huge conflagration has had on land use patterns in a large metropolitan central business district. It analyzes the changes that occurred in downtown Boston of 1872, after a great fire destroyed 65 acres of prime business land, displacing hundreds of firms and turning the buildings and streets into rubble. The study demonstrates the ways in which a destructive disaster can stimulate environmental improvements. The study also demonstrates the limitations of the impetus to improvement provided by a disaster.
