Post-Cast Headers for Bituminous Concrete Surfacing at Bridge Expansion Joints
Eight Portland Cement Concrete and four steel angle headers were constructed for durability comparisons. Variables in the PCC headers were: Type of cement, reinforcing steel, and type of cure. The only variable in the steel angle headers was thickness of metal: 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch. None of the headers have failed after being subjected to 18,000 average daily traffic for 40 months. There are, however, incipient failures, manifested either by loss of bond or loosening of the angles, in all of them. It was concluded that, based on initial cost, placement restrictions, and durability, the epoxy concrete headers are superior to either PCC or steel angle headers. Some possible solutions to the problems encountered in post-cast header construction are given. (Author)
