A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Relocatable structures frequently require heavy equipment for erection and involve hundreds of man-hours for construction. The need for heavy equipment can be eliminated and the construction time decreased by making the basic modules of the building small enough to be placed manually, by connecting all parts of the structure while they are still at ground level, and by raising the building by some means not requiring high-lift machinery. A model structure has been developed, consisting of prefabricated modules which are easily joined to form a 32-foot long horizontal structure capable of raising itself to form a 20-foot diameter arch. Methods for simultaneously erecting many such arches to form an entire building were examined. A weather covering which can be attached prior to erection and methods of locking all joints in the structure after erection were developed.
