The Influence of Filtration in the Body of a Gravity Dam on Its Stability (Wplyw Filtracji W Korpusie Zapory Masywnej NA Statecznosc Zapory)
If there exists filtration through the body of the dam, then there must also exist hydrodynamic mass forces acting within the body, which hitherto have not been taken into consideration. In such a case, the system of forces acting on the dam changes, and so it may turn out that the accepted scheme of loading the dam, taking into account only the external pressure of water, does not correspond to the actually existing conditions. The purpose of this work is to explain the problem mentioned above by: ascertaining the possibility of occurrence in the body of a concrete dam of hydrodynamic volume forces, depending on the filtration properties of the concrete block; finding out in what measure the hydrodynamic forces can influence the stability of the dam and the distribution of stresses in its body; determining in what cases filtration through the body of the dam should be taken into account. Elucidation of the phenomenon of filtration and action of hydrodynamic forces in the body of the dam may enable a more appropriate choice of assumptions and better accuracy of static calculations.
