Development of Fire Safety Criteria for Composite Polymeric Exterior Walls, Final Report
To determine the effects of replacing traditional components with synthetic polymeric materials, this research developed fire safety criteria based on the average level of fire performance provided by traditional wood - based wall systems. Additional test data were obtained on the fire performance of certain critical combinations of polymeric materials. The study focused on developing basic fire scenarios important to low - rise residential type exterior walls, identifying fire performance categories important for life safety and property protection, and testing procedures for use in modeling the fire scenarios developed. It also identified representative traditional exterior wall assemblies, measured and quantified the average fire performance of these, and developed performance criteria based on the results of the measurements. The study also identified and evaluated critical innovative (i.e., polymeric containing) exterior wall assemblies. It is emphasized that designers searching for new cost - effective and energy - effective exterior materials must recognize that fire safety is one of many engineering parameters which must be considered in order to achieve a successful design. Extensive charts and tabular material are given.
