Twin-Log Floating Breakwater, Small-Boat Basin No. 2, Juneau, Alaska. Hydraulic Model Investigation
Tests were conducted on 1:6-scale models of twin-log floating breakwaters to determine the feasibility of using this type of structure to protect Small-Boat Basin No. 2, Juneau, Alaska, from wave action. Specifically, it was desired to determine the most economical floating-log breakwater that would reduce a 2-ft wave to about 0.5 ft in the mooring area. Test variables included: (a) log diameters of 3 and 4 ft; (b) center-to-center log spacings of 4.0, 5.7, 8.2 ft; (c) water depths of 10 and 20 ft, which corresponded to low- and high-tide conditions, respectively; (d) wave periods of 1.7, 2.0, 2.5 sec; (e) wave heights of 0.9, 2.0, 2.5, and 2.6 ft; (f) angles of wave attack of 45 and 90 deg; and (g) vertical barrier plates attached to (1) the channelside face of the channelside log, (2) the harborside face of the harborside log, and (3) both channelside face of channelside log and harborside face of harborside log.
