Shaft Capacity of Driven Piles in Clay
A large database, consisting of details of over a thousand axial load tests on piles, has recently been assembled under the auspices of the American Petroleum Institute (API). The database has been used as a basis to formulate and assess a new method for calculating the shaft capacity of piles driven into clay. The method draws together existing total and effective stress approaches for calculating pile capacity, in a manner which reduces the sensitivity of the calculation to the measured shear strength of the soil.
