A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Defining the 'Digital Highway'
The United States Department of Transportation's (DOT) mission is 'ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future.' the DOT Strategic Plan states that new technologies must be developed to monitor highway and vehicle performance and provide information to improve highway and driver performance. This project supports the goals of the DOT by developing methods to define highway characteristics and monitor vehicle performance in real-time as well as displaying the information in the form of a 'Digital Highway.' The 'Digital Highway' is a dynamic and real-time description of the physical and operational characteristics of our nation's highways that positively affects the performance, efficiency, safety, security, and comfort of drivers. The 'Digital Highway' is the backbone that supports the concept of the intelligent highway transportation system of the future. The information contained in the 'Digital Highway' database can be used to support future research in a wide range of transportation areas. This project focuses on developing various parameters needed to define the 'Digital Highway' on fourteen miles of highway in Nevada.
