The report contains the architectural and archeological data sections on the Central Wharf at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. The architectural data section provides a glossary of terms which relate to wharf construction which assists the reader in his comprehension of the material presented. This section includes a summary of the history of the wharf from the 1780's to 1974 with references to owners building materials, conditions, and the Salem fire of 1914 which destroyed the frame buildings located on the wharf. Other topics discussed include the structural development of Central Wharf, methods and materials for rehabilitation and cost estimates. The section contains appendices, illustrations, maps and drawings. The archeological data sections presents results of excavations during 1973-74. The Central anchor wall trench and the stratigraphy of the wharf are discussed. This section contains illustrations on the excavations and a chart illustrating the stratigraphy of the areas.
