A Skid Resistance Study of Georgia Pavements
The report discusses the cooperative design and operation of a laboratory pavement polishing machine used to predetermine skid resistance properties at various stages of polish of both concrete and asphalt and field and laboratory specimens. The relative skid resistance values were related to field conditions through correlation with the British Portable Tester. All well constructed pavements have good initial skid resistance, but some materials lose a substantial portion of this skid resistance under the action of traffic. Past experience has shown that some Georgia limestones polish readily. Three blends of Georgia aggregates were used: all limestone; granite coarse with limestone fine aggregates; and limestone coarse with granite fine aggregates. (BPR)
