Kielder Trial Tunnel: Sprayed Concrete Extension
During 1977, the mudstone heading of the Kielder Experimental Tunnel was extended some 30 m by blasting in successive pulls about 2 m long. Each pull was supported by a complete ring of sprayed concrete applied at different times after blasting. This paper describes the construction, the concrete spraying operation, the timings of critical construction operations, the measurement of rock displacements and strains in the concrete supports, and a simple penetrometer to assess the rate of concrete stiffening.
