Joints and cracks in road and airfield pavements must be sealed against water with some sealant. Sealants must be able to accommodate movement, since the size of the joint or crack varies due to temperature induced movement in the pavement or for other reasons. Commonly used pavement sealants are based on asphalt or similar materials. Their ability to follow movement is improved by adding rubber and other extenders. Various types of curing sealants are also used. No thoroughly considered framework for designing a joint and judging its service life was found. Therefore a project was started, aiming at testing methods and a foundation for specifications with regard to expected service life at prevailing conditions. The present report gives results from testing of a selection of sealants. The results are compared with existing experience of performance. On this basis, by no means complete, a provisional testing scheme for judging performance and service life of sealants for road and airfield pavements is presented.
