Technical Options for Energy Conservation in Buildings

The purpose of the report is to provide reference material on the technical options for energy conservation in buildings. It was prepared for the National Conference of States for Building Codes and Standards-National Bureau of Standards Joint Emergency Workshop on Energy Conservation in Buildings held at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. on June 19, 1973. The report describes actions pertinent to existing buildings and new buildings. Regarding existing buildings, principal topics include summer cooling, winter heating, and other energy conserving features--i.e., insulation, fenestration, lighting, appliances, domestic hot water, and human comfort. Suggested actions include those which can be accomplished voluntarily or without expense, and also actions which require some modest effort or expense on the part of the building owner or occupant.
