Wood Structure Performance in an Earthquake in Anchorage, Alaska, March 27, 1964
Well-constructed light wood frame buildings for the most part resisted the shock forces of the earthquake that occurred in Alaska on Good Friday of 1964. This was not generally true of other types of construction. Because the majority of the homes in the Anchorage area were of wood frame construction, damages were usually superficial except in those areas where severe earth subsidence had occurred. There was some variation in the performance of the houses, based often on material choice, fastening methods, and construction details. Because the primary purpose of the survey was the investigation of wood frame structures, the majority of the descriptions cover such units. However, illustrations and details of many types of failures are included.
