A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In the report attention is paid to the results of fatigue tests, conducted on two asphalt concrete mixes: a sand asphalt and a dense asphalt concrete. During the displacement controlled fatigue tests crack growth and crack opening displacement (COD) measurements are carried out, beside the measurement of the force, the displacement and the phase angle between both signals. The growth of the crack in the specimens is measured with a crack foil, which is glued at the outside of the specimen. The COD is recorded with clip gages, which are fixed in the notches at both sides of the specimen. The crack foil informs about the macro crack growth during the fatigue test; the COD measurements about the micro crack zone in front of the macro crack tip. In this zone small cracks occur, which can not be measured with the crack foil. Out of the measurements it appears that the macro crack growth in the asphalt mixes is not a continuous process. There are small macro cracks in the specimen which join together into one large macro crack at the end of the test.
