Transverse Cracking in Concrete Bridge Decks

Early transverse cracking in bridge decks in their positive moment region is a phenomenon experienced by a large number of states throughout the country. To investigate the causes and extent of the problem in the State of Minnesota, a two-phase research program was conducted by the University of Minnesota (UMN). The first phase of the study was a field investigation to determine the correlation between the observed cracking and available design, material, and construction-related data (Eppers et al. 1998). The second phase of the research comprised a laboratory shrinkage study and a parametric study. In the parametric study, a number of variables (e.g. material properties, girder properties, and restraints) were investigated analytically to determine their relative influence on transverse cracking in bridge decks (Le et. al. 1998).
