Henri Maclaine Pont was born in 1884 in Meester Cornelis, a suburb of Batavia, the present Jakarta. The town quarter is now called Jantinegara. He finished his secondary school education and study for Architecture at the 'Technishche Hogeschool Delft' (THD) in the Netherlands. With his graduation he became the first alumnus of Architecture who was of life. Pont's identify, creativity and interest in Javanese Architecture and lifestyle was moulded by the influence of the environment in which he spent the early years of his life. Resulting in a life long interest and creative quest of the culture of Java, his homeland, expressed his designs. This book tells of his life and his works.
