Evaluation of INSITUFORM Pipe Rehabilitation
The INSITUFORM pipe rehabilitation process requires little or no excavation, improves flow in deteriorated pipes, and can save time and cost of total reconstruction. The method used polyester fiber-felt, thermosetting resins and polyurethane. The process involved placement of a pliable resin saturated tube positioned against the walls of the existing, deteriorated pipe, then heat treated to form a strong new pipe in a pipe. The process was tried on a 48 year old, asphalt and corrugated metal pipe on SR 0358 in Mercer County. It has performed satisfactory over the nine year study period. The rehabilitation, despite its high cost, the department realized a savings of $170,000 on this job, is recommended as an alternative that could be used statewide.
