The waterways system in Eastern and Southern Flevoland has primarily a drainage function. The recreational value of these waterways was first discovered by anglers, who visited Flevoland in great numbers at an early stage. The construction of special fishing places was a reaction to the development. In the western part of Eastern Flevoland and in Southern Flevoland the waterways have increasingly been included in landscape and recreational land-use plans. The past few years in particular, by the planning of both the rural and urban areas, great attention is paid to the attraction value of waterways and its banks to anglers, cyclists, walkers, leisure seekers and watersportsmen. So far a systematic infrastructure for the planning on watersport has been lacking.
