Bitumen Macadam for Resurfacing Roads Carrying Medium Traffic. Full-scale Experiment on A50 at Thornby, Northants
Experimental surfacings were laid in 1960 on the Northampton-Leicester road (A50), which carries 500 commercial vehicles per day, to study the performances of bitumen-macadam wearing courses. Crushed-rock and slag aggregates were used with cut-back and penetration-grade bitumens; three aggregate gradings and a range of binder contents for each composition gave 96 experimental surfacings. Throughout the duration of the experiment, visual inspections and SFC measurements were made, and towards the end of the period further tests were carried out on site and in the laboratory. (Author)
