Skid Resistance and Wear Properties of Aggregates for Paving Mixtures
In the research, skid resistance and wear properties of 20 sample aggregates representative of many of the aggregate types used in paving mixtures are investigated. Two procedures used in the wear and polishing of aggregates are described below: (1) a circular track machine for polishing pavement samples made from selected aggregates, and (2) a jar mill machine for wearing loose aggregates for various increments of time. Both methods of test are under development as the research and the development is discussed. Pavement specimens molded from the sample aggregates are tested for skid resistance before and after incremental time intervals of wear and polish; frictional skid numbers as measured with the British portable tester and reported; and aggregates are rated for skid resistance performance.
