Constant Rate of Loading Consolidation Test
For the past 50 years, the data used to estimate soil settlement characteristics has been obtained by the Bureau of Reclamation using a STD (standard incremental loading) consolidation test. Recently, several other test methods have been developed, among them the CRL (constant rate of loading) consolidation test. A versatile CRL apparatus, developed by the Bureau, is described. Test results from the CRL apparatus are compared to results from a STD apparatus. The results show: (1) test completion times for the CRL test are much shorter than for the STD test, (2) agreement between the results of the CRL and STD tests are within reasonable limits, and (3) the CRL apparatus and test procedure offer an attractive alternative to the STD test.
