Seismic Design and Retrofit Manual for Highway Bridges: Technical Summary
The poor performance of bridges during the Anchorage (1964) and San Fernando (1971) earthquakes dramatically demonstrated the need for improvements in their design. As a result, new seismic design procedures and engineering practices for bridge superstructures and foundations have been developed. The manual synthesizes material from the California Department of Transportation, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and FHWA-sponsored work by the Applied Technology Council, the Earth Technology Council, and the Engineering Computer Corporation, among others. The manual is applicable to a wide range of bridge types common in all seismic zones across the U.S., and it emphasizes the short- and medium-span bridges typical of current design practices.
