Road Maintenance Manual - Pavement Patching
The manual describes methods of repairing some defects in road pavements. In many cases a defect on the surface is an indication that there is a more serious problem under the surface, e.g. a weak subgrade or inadequate drainage. In such cases treatment of the surface condition alone will not achieve a permanent repair. Descriptions of these defects and of the conditions which cause them are contained in the 'Catalogue of Pavement Defects'. The materials used in patching should be as good as the materials used in building new roads. In some cases patching materials must have additional special qualities. An important example of this in repairing defects extending to the roadbase. Where crushed rock fill is to be used, it must be possible to compact it with light vibratory equipment in a confined space, and achieve a compacted material with low voids.
