Compressive Stress Distribution of Grouted Hollow Clay Masonry under Strain Gradient
Thirty-nine tests were performed on grouted hollow clay masonry prisms. The experimental variables of the project included unit width, unit strength, neutral axis location, and eccentric load location (in-plane or out-of-plane). Fifteen prisms were subjected to in-plane loading under strain gradient, fifteen to concentric loading for determination of standard prism compressive strength, and nine to out-of-plane loading under strain gradient. Servo controlled actuators imposed the neutral axis at a location controlled by a linear variable differential transformer (displacement transducer), and load was gradually increased to failure. Using the recorded test data and basic equations of mechanics, the properties of the Whitney stress block, which is popularly used in ultimate strength design of reinforced concrete, were determined for grouted hollow clay masonry.
