Shear and Torsion in Reinforced Concrete Beams. A Study of Critical Load and Torsional Stiffness
The internal forces and the critical loads in reinforced concrete beams with stirrups are studied in this report. Three different types of loading are examined individually; simultaneous bending and shear; torsion; and, simultaneous torsion, bending and shear. The report defines the critical load as the load which causes the stirrups to yield. The internal forces are illustrated by means of truss models in which the inclination of the compression struts is not known. This is determined by the energy method. Comparisons are made with tests, and these appear to confirm that the assumptions made with regard to the internal forces are reasonable. Comparisons are also made with additive formulae in the Swedish regulations for concrete structures (B7 1968) as regards the above-mentioned loads. (Author)
