Flexible Layered Pavement Design Procedure for Rhode Island
For the purpose of recommending a flexible pavement design procedure for Rhode Island using the AASHO Interim Guide, a study was made of 13 sites on selected in-service flexible pavements. Data obtained and tests performed include ADT, vehicle classification, present serviceability index (roughometer) layer thicknesses, subgrade soil density and moisture content, CBR (field and laboratory), undrained triaxial compression, and repeated load. Design curves based on the AASHO Interim Guide include a regional factor of 1.5. The equivalent daily 18-kip traffic loading is determined by data from Table W-4 of the loadometer survey and vehicle classification count. The soil support value is based on the CBR test. Structural layer coefficients are similar to the AASHO Road Test values and use the Marshall test for bituminous concrete. Total pavement thickness obtained using the structural number equation is then checked for frost consideration using the Corps of Engineers method of determining degree of frost susceptibility. Total pavement thickness then depends upon the design depth of frost penetration.
