In the past tar products were almost certainly applied on a substantial proportion of municipal roads. This is also true of national and provincial roads. The extent of such an application of tar products varies greatly between individual municipalities, district authorities or regions. It appears that the degree of tar product application is greater in the west and south of The Netherlands than in other parts of the country. Calculations based on a survey showed that a total of 2.5 million tons of asphalt are released annually as a result of the reconstruction and maintenance of Dutch road pavements. About 400,000 tons of this may be contaminated with tar. The amount of bituminous material released may be limited by applying selective milling. The publication gives an account of the results of the activities of the working group.
