Following completion of the water quality experimental facilities in 100-D Flow Laboratory, the initial series of water quality tests were begun during the month. Start-up of the tests proceeded satisfactorily with the new equipment, and no major obstacles were encountered. The primary objective of the first series of experiments is to determine the effect of pH on the rates of film formation and slug corrosion. This information will be needed within the next few months in conjunction with the sodium dichromate elimination test in H Pile and the alum-activated silica coagulation test at F Area. It is hopped that results from these experiments will provide information leading to the specification of a better process water from a pile operation standpoint with a reduction in water treatment costs.
