Synthesis of Highway Practice. 20. Rest Areas
The report presents the results of a comprehensive review and analysis of existing information on current practice in the location, design, operation, and maintenance of highway rest areas. Guidelines that past experience suggests will produce, in most instances, generally acceptable fulfillment of motorist requirements, are offered. The selection of such individual rest area items as spacing, location, size, parking facilities, buildings, convenience facilities, water supply, sewage disposal systems, and other items that experience has shown to be important, together with details of operation and maintenance, are discussed. Areas where information is inadequate and research is needed are identified.
