Landfill Fires: Their Magnitude, Characteristics, and Mitigation
Fires occurring at landfill sites across the United States are an ongoing, complex problem that has existed for decades. Landfill fires threaten the environment through toxic pollutants emitted into the air, water, and soil. These fires also pose a risk to firefighters and civilians who are exposed to the hazardous chemical compounds they emit. The degree of risk depends in part on the contents buried in the landfill, the geography of the landfill, and the nature of the fire. There can be great difficulty in the detection and extinguishment of landfill fires, which is compounded because these fires often smolder for weeks under the surface of the landfill before being discovered. This report presents an overview of the landfill fire problem. Issues examined include the landfill components that create fire hazards; the effect of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and landfill cleanup efforts; a profile of landfill fires including their characteristics, methods of extinguishing, and safety issues for firefighters; prevention efforts to reduce landfill fires; and past examples of significant landfill fires and lessons learned.
