This manual contains information and guidelines for use of residential sprinklers in order to save lives in different types of residential occupations. It also contains guidelines for a more flexible building design if residential sprinklers are installed. Residential fires often have a rapid development and cause most fire victims, about 80-90% in most countries. Residential sprinklers were introduced in Northern America in the late 70s as a new tool to reduce the high number of fire victims. The experience shows that sprinklers have been very effective in saving lives since they extinguish or delay a fire at an early stage and increase the time for escape. Practically no one has been killed in a fire in a sprinkled building. In addition to saving lives, residential sprinklers may allow for an alternative design of the buildings. Requirements on passive fire protection and means of safe egress may be at least partly disregarded. This will facilitate a more flexible use of alternative building products. The following alternative building design solutions in relation to the Swedish building code have been verified.
