Collapse of U.S. 35 Highway Bridge, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, December 15, 1967
The U.S. 35 highway bridge connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Kanauga, Ohio, collapsed at approximately 5:00 p.m. e. s. t., December 15, 1967. Forty-six persons died in the accident and nine were injured. Two of the 46 persons are still missing. There were 37 vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Thirty-one of them fell with the bridge, and of these, 24 fell into the water and were later recovered. The other seven vehicles fell with the bridge on the Ohio shore. There were no pedestrians on the bridge at the time of the collapse. The weather at the time of the accident was cloudy with light wind from the west and the temperature was 30F. (Author)
