Stability of Slender Prestressed Concrete Piling. Phase II
The report describes the research performed to evaluate the handling, driving and laboratory testing of slender prestressed concrete piling made from lightweight concrete and sand and gravel concrete. Piles were 70 feet long and 12 inches square. The field evaluation consisted of fabricating, handling, and driving two piles each of lightweight and standard aggregate. One of each type was driven with a Vulcan No. 06 hammer and one with a Vulcan No. 1. No difficulty was encountered with either type of pile. The laboratory study consisted of bending tests on lightweight and standard aggregate beams 40 feet long. Two modes of binding were employed. The results indicated that shears of a magnitude sufficient to cause diagonal tension failure are unlikely to occur, slight cracking due to bending does not affect stiffness, and that bond failure is improbable.
