Construction Zone Delineation (Raised Pavement Markers)
The Implementation Division of the Office of Development initiated a series of projects to evaluate the effectiveness of raised pavement markers as a means of guiding traffic through construction zones. This Tech Share document summarizes the results of those projects. One of the major findings of this evaluation was that the raised reflective pavement markers provide positive daylight and nightime guidance through both wet and dry periods. The additional safety, improved operations, reduced vandalism and unanimous favor by the public, Government and construction personnel justify their expanded use. The use of raised reflective pavement markers on construction detours also indicates a trend toward reducing the number of accidents. From an economic standpoint the cost of markers and paint is equal to or less than the cost of paint striping and removal.
