Integrated Passive Solar Caliche Building. Final Report
The objectives for this building were to utilize a combination of indigenous resources for the purpose of resource conservation and the potential for long term job production if similar building procedures were incorporated in the region. Specific objectives were the following: the testing of local caliche soils to determine their usability as a stabilized building material; the use of clear night sky as a heat sink for a roof radiant cooling system using the building slab as heat storage; the use of exterior insulation made of local materials to help hold constant temperature within building's caliche mass summer and winter; the use of bamboo species as reinforcing within the foundation of building; to develop a series of water conservation measures for the building; to build a data collection system to monitor the building summer and winter for one year; to transfer these building technologies to local labor.
