Classification, Engineering Properties and Field Exploration of Soils, Intact Rock and in situ Rock Masses
A nuclear power facility consists of large, heavy and complex structures for which special attention must be given to consideration of the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics as influenced by the subsurface conditions. Because of the importance of possible seismic effects on the performance of nuclear plants, and the concern for public safety, generally it is necessary to carry out comprehensive field exploration and foundation evaluation studies in more detail than might be the case for solely static loading conditions. The purpose of this report is to attempt to place in perspective the various aspects of classification and engineering properties of soil and rock materials and field exploration studies connected therewith as they pertain specifically to nuclear reactor facility investigations.
